African Woven Baskets | Fair Trade

Fair Trade one of a kind baskets woven by hand and made with natural materials that are harvested locally near the village in Ghana. Each basket is unique in design, color, and pattern. The village is Bolgatanga which is the largest town in the Upper East region of Ghana. It is about 20 miles South of the Burkina Faso border and close to the edge of the Sahara Desert. In short, this region is drenched by the rays of the sun for a majority of the year. The people who live here are mainly farmers and herdsman. However, in the scalding heat, farming can be a daunting task. Women in the village continue to make crafts in the traditional style of their heritage. One of these crafts being woven baskets. They are made from locally grown straw, harvested by the women of the village. The baskets are then designed and are hand woven by these women. They can make about two per week alongside the numerous other tasks they do daily. 

The art of basket weaving has contributed greatly to the villages around Bolgatanga. People around the globe are looking to add some flair to their home with these stunning baskets. The traditional skill of basket weaving is handed down from generation to generation. This art provides employment to about 10,000 people in this region and most of them are women. These women create a few baskets a week alongside other tasks including collecting firewood and water, caring for children, and daily household chores.
